The Medicine Hole golf course is a 9-hole course designed by Jim Engh of the Engh Golf Group and is located just northeast of the City of Killdeer, North Dakota.
It features the designers signature mounding outlining the fairways and greens with an amphitheater effect for the hillside greens.
There are elevation changes on all holes that are as much as 120 feet from tee to green. Water comes into play on two holes on this links type course.
The course measures just 3000 yards from the white tees but stretches to almost 3300 yards from the tips.
The Medicine hole itself is a cave located at the highest point of the Killdeer Mountains near the southeast corner. Cool air rises from this hole in the summertime and steam may appear from the cave in the winter. This current of air is reputed to have medicinal healing power. A half-mile trail leads to it from the base of the mountain.
The site became sacred to the native Americans in the course of their many hunting expeditions to the area over the centuries before the white man came. Legend has it that 6000 Sioux escaped from the Battle of the Killdeer Mountains by entering the Medicine Hole and coming out somewhere on the other side of the mountain.
However, no outlet has ever been found. Another legend is that when the buffalo was created at the beginning of time, they emerged from the Medicine hole.
